Deutsche Lufthansa chairman Mr Juergen Weber said that half of all airlines are broke, because they are selling flights too cheaply, German weekly Wirtschaftswochereported.

"In reality half of the airlines in the world are broke," Mr Weber said, according to the magazine.

These problems are only partially caused by external factors, the chairman added.

"Price dumping ... ruins them," he said. Many airlines are much too interested in market share and do not have a price structure that is high enough to cover their expenditure.

Weber said he does not believe that budget airlines will make flying cheaper. "No one can avoid simple economic laws. Flying on average cannot become cheaper, not even with the budget airlines," the chairman told Wirtschaftswoche.
