The Apprentice Boys of Derry yesterday welcomed the decision by the Bogside Residents Group not to protest against the annual Lundy Day parade in Derry on December 4th.

Two years ago damage estimated at over £3 million sterling was caused to city centre properties when street clashes broke out during the parade.

Mr Donnacha Mac Niallais, representing the residents, said the decision was "an acknowledgement of the steps taken in recent years by the order to engage in dialogue and control their own members". The decision was also welcomed by the Apprentice Boys and city centre traders.

"It's a positive step in the right direction," said Mr William Hay, a spokesman for the order. Mr Garvan O'Doherty, a businessman, and Mr Brendan Duddy, who facilitated talks between the Apprentice Boys and the Bogside Residents Group, yesterday praised both organisations.
