Santiago - Germany's foremost Lutheran leader yesterday attacked a secretive German enclave in southern Chile, which has been plagued by child sex scandals, saying his church had no links with the colony's fugitive founder.

"We know in Germany there is great concern about Colonia Dignidad [Dignity Colony]. We condemn the treatment given to the people in the colony," the president of the German Lutheran Council, Bishop Klaus Engelhardt, said.

The colony's founder, Mr Paul Schaefer (76), a former Nazi corporal, has been on the run from police since last year after being charged with sexually assaulting Chilean boys.
