Cricket:Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon took five wickets in the final session to end West Indies' fight back on day three of the second Test at Port-of-Spain.
Lyon finished another rain-affected day with first-innings figures of five for 68 as he almost single-handedly reduced the hosts from 230 for four to 252 for nine at the close, 59 runs behind their opponents.
Up until Lyon’s contribution, the day had belonged to Shivnarine Chanderpaul who made 94 to lead the Windies’ recovery. He put on 130 for the fifth wicket with Narsingh Deonarine, who went for 55 to become Lyon’s first victim, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade making the stumping as the batsman came down the pitch.
The start of play was delayed because of a power failure at the ground which meant no television pictures and DRS, but, eventually resuming on 49 for three, Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo took the score to three figures this morning before Bravo went for 38, trapped leg before wicket by Mike Hussey.
Chanderpaul and Deonarine then brought the Windies right back into the match, their partnership spanning all three sessions, with tea taken early because of rain. But the evening belonged firmly to Lyon, who, having ended Deonarine’s stay at the crease, denied Chanderpaul a century by trapping him lbw to leave the home side on 231 for six.
Darren Sammy was next to go for one, caught at long on by Hussey. Shane Shillingford followed after he was caught off bat and pad by Ed Cowan at short leg for four. Kemar Roach went for a duck, sending an outside edge through to Wade, as Australia made it five wickets for the loss of just 19 runs.
Carlton Baugh finished the day on 17 not out, with Fidel Edwards yet to score at the other end. Australia lead the three-Test series 1-0.
