A collision near the West Link toll bridge on Dublin's M50 caused massive tailbacks this morning as one lane was effectively closed to traffic.

Gardaí spent some time dealing with the two-vehicle crash on the southbound approach to the toll plaza.

AA Roadwatch said that at one point this morning, traffic tailed back to the airport roundabout, about seven miles up the motorway.

Motorists on the Navan Road and inbound on the M50 also suffered delays due to the accident.

There will be plenty of traffic around Ballsbridge and on the N11 throughout the day and for the rest of the weekend because of the Dublin Horse Show.

The event is open from 9.30am to 6.30pm each day. Simmonscourt Road will be closed from 7am to 8pm. Some 80,000 people will have visited the show by the time it closes on Sunday evening.

On the sport front this weekend, Croke Park will pack in crowds for two major matches on Sunday.

Galway play Cork in the Senior Football Championship quarter final at 1.30pm and the Kerry v Mayo clash is set for 3.30pm. Some traffic congestion in the Drumcondra area should be expected before and after the matches.

Tomorrow, Croke Park will host the Laois v Derry and Tyrone v Monaghan Senior Football Championship qualifiers at 2pm and 4pm respectively.

And Dr Hyde park is the venue for the London v Roscommon showdown for the Tommy Murphy cup.

In general traffic news, there will be restrictions in place on the East Wall Road in Dublin until at least next Monday due to upgrading works on the junction to facilitate the port tunnel.

Lane restrictions are in place at Balally Hill on the Sandyford Road (Dundrum), until the 17th October. Restrictions are also in place at four locations on the N11 outside rush hour - they are Fosters Avenue, Kill Lane, Clonkeen Road and Johnstown Road.

On the Dart line, upgrade works continue this weekend and there will be no services operating south of Pearse on Saturday and Sunday. The work is due to finish on the weekend of September 10th-11th. However, there will be a service on the weekend of August 20th-21st, to facilitate an air show.

In Cork, Beach Road is closed to public traffic until Monday alternative routes east and west will be via the R610, Main Street in Passage West.

Passengers travelling through Dublin airport this weekend should check in at least 90 minutes before their flight departure time due to new security measures.

Shannon Airport also advised intending passengers to expect delays on the N18 south of Bunratty due to roadworks until  August 31st. The Limerick to Shannon carriageway and Shannon to Limerick carriageway will both be reduced to single lanes between these dates and there will be delays at rush-hours.
