Sinn Féin:Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams last night formally launched the election campaign of Sligo/north Leitrim candidate, Cllr Seán MacManus, who missed the event himself, having suffered a minor heart attack on Monday.

Mr Adams made a detour to Sligo hospital to visit Mr MacManus (56), before attending the event at the Glasshouse Hotel in Sligo.

A party spokesman said that Mr MacManus would be transferred to St James's Hospital, Dublin tomorrow, where he will undergo a stent procedure, a common treatment for blocked arteries.

He added that Mr MacManus was recovering well and was expected to be back on the campaign trail next week.

It is understood that Mr MacManus went to the emergency department at Sligo hospital on Monday morning having experienced chest pains overnight and was informed that he had suffered a heart attack.

Mr MacManus's party colleague, Cavan/Monaghan TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin also underwent a stent procedure at St James's Hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home in February.

Beginning today, Mr Adams and other senior Sinn Féin party officials will visit 29 constituencies over the next six days in a tour that will focus on the party's role in the peace process.
