A prison officer and his family have escaped injury in a petrol bomb attack in their home in Co Antrim.

It is believed the prison officer, his wife and 20-year-old son were asleep in their home in Lisburn when a number of petrol bombs were thrown.

The family was alerted by a passer-by who noticed the flames.

Mr Finlay Spratt, chairman of the Prison Officers Association, blamed the attack on paramilitaries.

A number of prison officer homes have been targeted by loyalists demanding separation from republicans at Maghaberry high security prison near Lisburn.

Segregation was introduced at the jail following an independent review carried out earlier this year.

Mr Spratt said: "The officer who was attacked works at Maghaberry so obviously paramilitaries are still at their work.

"It is a disgrace that they should still be attacking prison officers' homes. They got their separation and they are still not satisfied."
