Former leading jockey Adrian Maguire looks likely to saddle his first runner under rules at Killarney this Sunday.
The Irishman was one of the few jockeys to ride more than 1000 winners but was forced to curtail his riding career following a serious injury to his neck in October 2002.
The 33-year-old is now training horses in County Cork and will have his first runner when Marche Militaire contests the Killarney Grand Hotel Handicap Hurdle over two and a half miles.
"I have a restricted license, which means I can train only four horses, but I have done the full trainer's course and will be able to take out a full license when I need to, probably be in the autumn," Maguire told the Racing Post.
His runner this weekend was formerly trained by Lenny Lungo and has been off the track since March 2002, although he has won two of his four career starts.
"Marche Militaire broke down badly and is a gross little horse who is going to need the run," added Maguire.
"We're hoping that he will run well and it's great to be starting off as a trainer on the track. I've run four horses in point-to-points. A mare called Odeeka won for us at the Horse and Jockey Fixture and we'll be running Sub Arctic at Ballindensik on Sunday."
