Gardaí were last night still trying to establish the cause of the accident in Co Sligo in which Marie Rooney (15) was killed and her friend, Linda Rooney (16), injured.
The girls were struck by a car as they waited by the side of the road for their school bus at Moneygold, three miles north of Grange, shortly before 8.30am.
Marie Rooney, the daughter of a local farmer from Grange, died instantly in the accident. Linda Rooney was last night recovering in Sligo General Hospital. She has leg injuries which were said to be not life-threatening. The girls were not related.
A 35-year-old woman died in an accident in Gorey, Co Wexford yesterday while pushing a pram. She was named last night as Andrea McGlynn, from Beachside Avenue, Riverchapel, Courtown.
Supt John Roche from Gorey Garda Station said Ms McGlynn appeared to have fallen under the rear of a 40-foot articulated lorry.
Ms McGlynn, who is believed to have come originally from Bray, Co Wicklow, managed to push the pram containing her three-month-old son out of the way before she was killed.
Her husband works in Dublin but was at home at the time of the accident, which occurred shortly before 1pm yesterday at the traffic lights on Gorey's main street.
So far this year 382 people have died on the State's roads. With two weeks still left in 2005, road deaths are already at
8 more than the total for 2004.
