A CO Galway man has been charged with the murder of his grandfather.

Gearóid Fahy (22), Carrownamona, Ardrahan, Co Galway, appeared before a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday night charged with the murder of 78-year old Finbar Fahy at Ballinduff, Ardrahan on Tuesday.

Det Insp Gerry Roche told Judge Joseph Mangan that he arrested Mr Fahy at 5.16pm on Saturday at Gort Garda station and that at 5.36pm he charged him with the murder of Finbar Fahy.

Det Insp Roche said that, in reply, Mr Fahy said: “I am just sorry for what I have done. And I am sorry for all the people I have hurt.” Supt Seán Healy asked that the accused be remanded in custody.

Mr Fahy, who is unemployed, was granted free legal aid and defending solicitor Angela Dempsey said there was no application for bail.

She asked Judge Mangan that her client be examined by a doctor in prison.

“He is on continuing medication and is being seen by a doctor in Gort,” she said.

Mr Fahy, who wore dark jeans and a blue jumper, did not speak during the five-minute hearing.

He was not accompanied by family members or friends in court.

Judge Mangan remanded the accused in custody to appear before Shannon District Court, sitting in Ennis, next Thursday.

He stated the court requested that the accused be medically examined in prison.
