Gardaí in Cork are continuing to question a 25-year old-man about a stabbing incident which left a young man fighting for his life this morning in a Cork hospital.

Gardaí from Gurranebraher Garda station arrested the man after they received a call about a stabbing at Heritage House on Cathedral Road in the city at around 9.20pm last night.

The 24-year-old victim had suffered serious stab wounds to the head, back, stomach and legs and was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

The injured man - who is from the northside of the city - underwent emergency surgery at the hospital last night and his condition is understood to be critical.

Gardaí arrested a man at the scene and brought him to Gurranebraher Garda Station for questioning about the attack. He was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí cordoned off the apartment where the stabbing happened and a Garda technical team is continuing with a forensic examination at the scene this morning.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have been passing on Cathedral Road around 9pm and heard any noise or disturbance to contact them at Gurranebraher on 021-4946200.
