Gardaí from Finglas were called and detectives arrived shortly afterwards to find Mr Rodgers on the ground suffering from serious injuries. Another man was detained at the scene.

He was taken to Finglas Garda station where he was held under the Criminal Justice Act.

The 29-year-old man was charged in Finglas station yesterday afternoon under the Non-fatal Offences Act and is due to appear before the District Court today.

The investigation into the incident is headed by Det Supt Tony Sourke and Det Insp John Mulligan.

Stabbings arising from what are termed "domestic" incidents remain one of the largest categories of homicide in this State.

Last year there were more that 20 fatal stabbings, almost all arising from domestic incidents or street fights.

This accounted for almost half the homicides.
