A 34 year-old man has appeared in court on charges related to the death of an elderly man who was injured in an attack in Dublin at the weekend.

Stephen Byrne, no fixed address, was charged with assault causing harm to 68 year-old William Traynor at Francis Terrace, Bow Street, on Sunday last.

Mr Traynor was found with serious head injuries by members of Dublin Fire Brigade who had responded at 5.45pm to a house fire at St Francis Terrace, Bow Street.

He was found lying in the front room and was removed to the Mater Hospital where he died last night.

Mr Byrne's solicitor said there was no application for bail at this stage but asked that the case be put back to Friday when there may be an address available for Mr Byrne.

Mr Byrne was remanded in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court next Friday.
