Man (59) dies after early morning assault in Dundalk

A 30-year-old man is being questioned by gardai Dundalk Co Louth today after a man died in an assault in the town last night.

A 30-year-old man is being questioned by gardai Dundalk Co Louth today after a man died in an assault in the town last night.

The 59-year-old local man appears to have died from head injuries received in the assault. His body was found on Patrick Street at 12.35 a.m. It is believed he was assaulted a short time beforehand.

The body remains at the scene. The Deputy State Pathologist was due in Dundalk at 1 p.m.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them, particularly those who were in the area of The Laurels, Bridge Street, Patrick Street or Church Street shortly after midnight.

A 30-year-old Dundalk man was arrested this morning in relation to the incident. He is being held at Dundalk Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, where he can be held for up to 12 hours.
