Man (70) gets 8 years for abusing children

A 70-year-old man has been jailed for eight years at Sligo Circuit Court for raping a 12-year-old boy in the early 1980s.

A 70-year-old man has been jailed for eight years at Sligo Circuit Court for raping a 12-year-old boy in the early 1980s.

The court was told that James Desmond Lee, of Station Road, Ballisodare, had offered two of the victims €2,000 each to drop the charges.

The victims told the court that they came forward last year after seeing Lee ferrying children in his taxi and were fearful for their safety.

He was found guilty by a jury following a two-day trial for the assaults on the boy in 1982.

Judge Anthony Kennedy described as "woefully weak", a psychiatrist's report on Lee as it had not addressed his past or the chances of his reoffending. Lee was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

He received concurrent jail terms of one to three years on three counts of indecently assaulting the same boy, charges to which he had admitted.

He was also sentenced to concurrent terms ranging from one year to four years on charges of indecently assaulting three other boys in the 1970s.

Lee had also pleaded guilty to these offences.

He was acquitted on one count of indecent assault.

The judge said it was a case of repeat offending and that the accused had planned the assaults for his own perverted pleasure.

A now 35-year-old man told the trial how he was buggered on two occasions in Lee's house - the first incident occurring in April 1982 and the other taking place in August of the same year.

On each occasion, Lee, a trusted family friend, had shown the victim pornographic magazines and videos before taking him to a bedroom.

Lee indecently assaulted another boy in his house after telling him that he was turning into "a fine lad."

He abused the boy between 1971 and 1979.

Another boy entered Lee's house after being asked to buy him an orange in a local shop. He was then sexually abused.

A 12-year-old boy was invited into Lee's house after Sunday Mass. The boy was shown a Playboy magazine by Lee who proceeded to sexually abuse him.

Garda Sgt James Costello told the court that Lee had shown complete arrogance towards gardaí.

The victims told the court how their lives had been blighted by the effects of the abuse committed by Lee.

Each said they had been left with lingering thoughts of shame, embarrassment and guilt.

Judge Kennedy said Lee typified the devious and cunning nature of a child molester and was skilled at manipulation. He had lead a double life.
