Man admits rape attempt on widow

A Dublin man pleaded guilty yesterday to the attempted rape of an 87-year-old widow in her home last year

A Dublin man pleaded guilty yesterday to the attempted rape of an 87-year-old widow in her home last year. The victim has since died but not as a result of the incident, Mr Tom O'Connell, defending, told the Central Criminal Court. Mr O'Connell said Gerard Moran had been on bail pending his trial but was now consenting to a remand in custody. Moran (22), of Leinster Street, admitted the offence, which was committed on December 6th, 1996.

Mr Justice McCracken requested the preparation of a probation report on Moran and remanded him in custody. Evidence of the crime will be given at the sentencing hearing on February 12th next.
