Man admits sex abuse of five girls

A Sligo man pleaded guilty yesterday to sexually assaulting five girls in 1992-93 when they were aged seven to 10 years

A Sligo man pleaded guilty yesterday to sexually assaulting five girls in 1992-93 when they were aged seven to 10 years. The 40-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded on continuing bail to appear for sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on October 20th.charges of sexually assaulting the girls on unknown dates from May 1992 to September 1993. The girls are now aged 11 to 13.

Judge Kevin Haugh said he was continuing the defendant's bail purely because the case could not he dealt with before the summer recess. Extending the bail was not an indication of hew he would deal with the case in October, he added.

Mr Eanna Mulloy, prosecuting, said there was no Garda objection to bail as long as the defendant signed on daily. He also requested victim impact statements on the girls. Mr Blaise O'Carroll SC, defending, requested a probation report on his client and said the defence would also organise a medical examination of the man.
