A Co Monaghan garage owner who was tricked by the father of two children into tape-recording a confession of sexually abusing them has been jailed for seven years by the Central Criminal Court.

The victims' father told Mr Justice Paul Carney he did not regret using a ruse to get his former next-door neighbour into his house so as to record him even though the Garda advised him the tape would not be admissible in evidence.

The now 33-year-old single defendant pleaded guilty to one charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15, and seven charges of indecently assaulting her and her younger brother on dates from 1984 to 1988. He cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims and had no previous convictions.
