A man has been released from prison after he agreed to comply with a High Court order compelling him to demolish the timber cabin which has been his home for several years.

Mr Justice John Hedigan jailed Derek Griffin earlier this month after finding him in contempt of an order obtained by Fingal County Council directing him to take down the timber bungalow at Burrow, Portrane, Co Dublin. The council claimed it was built without planning permission.

The council had deemed Mr Griffin eligible for social housing and had offered him a three-bedroom house in Skerries. Mr Griffin told the judge he would not accept the offer because the house was too far away. As Mr Griffin had continually refused to comply with the court’s order, he was committed to prison for contempt.

Yesterday Mr Griffin told the court he had accepted the council’s offer and undertook to comply with orders to demolish the timber bungalow.
