Gardaí yesterday arrested a young man for questioning about the death of an 18-year-old youth who was died after being stabbed during a row in a house in Waterford city early yesterday morning.

Detectives arrested the young man at about 6 p.m. yesterday and brought him to Waterford Garda station for questioning about the killing of Brian O'Neill, Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, Waterford.

He was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardaí to detain suspects for an initial six hours. They can extend the period for a second six hours upon the application of a Garda superintendent.

Mr O'Neill was stabbed a number of times in the head, neck and upper chest during a row at a party in a house on Woodlawn Green on the Cork Road at around 4 a.m.

He managed to make his way out of the rented house in the private estate, but collapsed in the driveway of the house before the emergency services arrived.

He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where he died later from his injuries.

A team of Garda technical experts from Dublin began a forensic examination of the house and the surrounding area yesterday afternoon.

The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, will carry out a post-mortem on Mr O'Neill's body at Waterford Regional Hospital today.
