BRITAIN: Detectives in West Yorkshire were questioning a 20-year-old man and police issued warrants for two other men yesterday in connection with the murder of a man who chased suspected car thieves.
At the same time police in East Yorkshire arrested two men following a separate, unrelated, incident in which a man was stabbed in the neck and face after confronting two men suspected of stealing his car.
The arrest in West Yorkshire came four days after Kevin Jackson (31), a father of two boys, died from stab injuries to his head which were sustained when he chased two suspected car thieves near his home in Halifax.
In the early hours of Sunday, Mr Jackson's wife, Julie, heard noises outside their house and saw two men attempting to steal her father's car. Mr Jackson chased them along the country lane outside his house and Mrs Jackson telephoned the police. A few minutes later a passing driver found Mr Jackson lying on the road with head injuries, possibly caused by a screwdriver. Mr Jackson died on New Year's Day after failing to regain consciousness.
The man was arrested after police received more than 70 telephone calls from the public following Mrs Jackson's emotional appeal for information this week.
Supt Bob Bridgestock, who is leading the murder inquiry, said the man was arrested in Bradford and a car was also recovered.
