British police used a stun gun to arrest a man carrying a suspicious package near an aircraft at Manchester airport today, prompting the temporary closure of the northern England airport.

"Police attempted to arrest the man who struggled with officers. A Taser gun was then used to detain the man," a spokeswoman for Manchester police said.

An army bomb disposal unit investigated the package and then carried out a controlled explosion on it.

Parts of two terminals were evacuated and passengers on outgoing flights were told not to turn up.

"The alert is now over. We are telling passengers they can report to the airport again and police are about to lift the security cordon," a spokeswoman told report. A car believed to belong to the arrested man has been recovered and is being examined.

Britain has been on high alert for more attacks since four suicide bombers blew themselves up on the London transport system on July 7th, killing 52 commuters, and four more men botched similar attacks two weeks later.

Manchester Airport in the northwest of England is home to around 95 airlines flying more than 19 million passengers to over 170 destinations each year.
