A man was badly beaten by a masked gang with crowbars, pickaxe handles and hammers in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry.

A man was badly beaten by a masked gang with crowbars, pickaxe handles and hammers in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry.

The victim (28) was assaulted after six men forced their way into a house in Inishowen Gardens last night.

He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital where he is being treated for fractures to his left arm and leg, puncture wounds to his legs and arm, and cuts and bruises to his body.

A police spokesman confirmed the pickaxe handles used in the assault were studded with nails. Detectives have yet to establish a motive for the attack, which happened around 10.30pm.
