A 22-year-old disabled man has been charged with causing a fire at a care home last year during which an elderly resident died.
At Killaloe District Court yesterday, the book of evidence was due to be served on James Sherlock of Childers Road, Ennis, Co Clare. Mr Sherlock is charged with arson under section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act at the Lakes Nursing Home, Killaloe, on August 20th last.
An inquest found last week that Margaret O’Gorman (95) did not die from the effects of the fire but of natural causes.
At the District Court yesterday, solicitor Tara Godfrey, for Mr Sherlock, said he was a paraplegic and was now in hospital in Limerick. Ms Godfrey said that there had been an episode involving Mr Sherlock at the hospital and he was not able to attend the court.
Judge Aeneas McCarthy extended time for the book of evidence to be served and adjourned the case to Killaloe District Court to January 3rd next.
