A 22-year-old man has appeared in court in Belfast today charged in relation to a ramming incident in the city early this morning in which a police officer was injured.

The officer was taken to hospital with a serious neck injury after his patrol car was rammed.

The incident happened at around 1.30 a.m. on Castle Street.

A PSNI spokesman said the patrol car was travelling in the direction of Royal Avenue when it was hit by a silver BMW been driven at speed out of Chapel Lane. The driver of the BMW fled the scene.

The PSNI is also investigating a shooting incident in Derry overnight.

Two shots were fired through the window of a house in Glendermott Road in the Waterside area of the city. Two men were later arrested.

It is not believed the shooting was sectarian but police have not ruled out paramilitary involvement.
