A MAN has been charged with themurder of Darren McGrath in Belturbet, Co Cavan last month.
Trevor McCabe (32), Mountpleasant, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, appeared before Judge Seán McBride at a special sitting of Monaghan District Court on Saturday.
He was charged with the murder of Mr McGrath at a house at Kilconney, Belturbet on May 20th.
Mr McGrath (31), who was originally from the Mahon area of Co Cork, was shot dead as he lay in bed. Gardaí said Mr McGrath’s partner was in the room at the time of the shooting and that the couple’s 13-month-old baby was sleeping in another bedroom.
Mr McCabe sat quietly in the court yesterday dressed in a grey and white striped hoodie, blue track suit bottoms and white runners. A short distance away sat relatives of the murdered man.
Insp Pat McMorrow, Monaghan sought that Mr McCabe be remanded in custody to Clover Hill prison to appear at the court there on June 5th.
Solicitor for Mr McCabe, John Devane, told the court that his client has asked him to highlight the fact that Monaghan Courthouse did not have suitable access for his client who had a serious leg injury resulting from a motorbike accident in August 2007.
“My client pulled his leg coming up the steps and I just want to mention that as a matter of public record,” he said.
Judge McBride recommended to the governor of Clover Hill that Mr McCabe receive medical treatment, and remanded him in custody until next Thursday.
