Man charged over Christmas murder in Dundalk

A 30-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a man in Dundalk last Christmas Eve.

A 30-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a man in Dundalk last Christmas Eve.

Mr Kenneth Cunningham, Woodview Park, Castletown Road, Dundalk was charged at a special sitting of Dundalk District Court with murdering Mr Laurence Garvey (59) at Patrick Street, Dundalk on December 24th 2003.

The court heard that when charged,  he had shaken his head and made no reply.

Judge Flann Brennan agreed to an application from Garda Superintendent Pat Magee that he be remanded in custody. A bail application will be made to the High Court.

Mr Cunningham was in custody to appear before Dundalk District Court on Wednesday next.

Mr Garvey (59) of Oliver Plunkett Park suffered serious head and facial injuries when he was assaulted in Patrick Street close to the town centre. He died later in hospital.

He was thought to have witnessed an altercation in a bar earlier that evening.
