A security guard was charged yesterday with the manslaughter of Garda Sgt Andrew Callanan, who was burnt to death in Tallaght Garda station on July 21st.

Mr Daniel O'Toole (35), from Donamore Crescent, Tallaght, Co Dublin, was also charged with arson at the station.

Det Insp Martin McLaughlin told Dublin District Court he arrested Mr O'Toole at 8.05 p.m. on Wednesday. In reply to both charges he said: "No, nothing to say." Insp McLaughlin applied to have him remanded in custody for a week. When asked by Judge William Early if he was working, Mr O'Toole said he was a security officer earning between £200 and £250 a week. Judge Early assigned a solicitor, Mr Bobby Eager, on free legal aid to defend Mr O'Toole.

Mr Eager said there was no application for bail but he sought an order from the court directing that he receive medical treatment for wounds, which required to be cleaned and dressed every two days. Judge Early directed that he be given full medical treatment and remanded Mr O'Toole in custody for a week.
