A homeless man appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with the death of a 68-year-old man following an incident in a house in Dublin last weekend.
Stephen Byrne (34), of no fixed address, was charged with assault causing harm to William Traynor at Francis Terrace, Bow Street, on Sunday.
Mr Traynor was found with head injuries in the front room of the house by fire-fighters responding to reports of a fire.
Det Garda Frank Treacy, of the Bridewell, told Dublin District Court he arrested Mr Byrne on Tuesday night, and after he was charged yesterday he made no reply.
He applied for a remand in custody.
Mr Byrne's solicitor said there was no application for bail at this stage, but asked that the case be put back to tomorrow when there may be an address available for Mr Byrne.
He also asked that medical treatment be provided while Mr Byrne was in custody.
Judge Cormac Dunne said this was a matter for the prison governor, but he would make an order recommending treatment.
The judge also granted free legal aid, and remanded Mr Byrne in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court tomorrow.
Mr Traynor was a well-known character in Francis Street. He lived in one room in a derelict house, and had no heat or electricity.
He was particularly known for a distinctive bicycle which he had painted different colours.
