A 23-year-old man appeared in court in Limerick yesterday charged with the gangland murder of Frankie Ryan in the Moyross area of the city last weekend.

Gary Campion of Pineview Gardens, Moyross, appeared at a special sitting of Limerick District Court.

He was charged with the murder of 21 year-old Frankie Ryan at Delmege Park, Moyross, on September 17th last.

The court heard that Mr Campion did not have a solicitor in court and Judge Tom O'Donnell directed that solicitor Christopher Lynch should be assigned to the case.

The accused spoke once during the brief sitting to ask Judge O'Donnell if he could apply for bail.

Judge O'Donnell advised that bail on a murder charge was a matter for the High Court. He remanded the accused in custody to appear again before Limerick District Court tomorrow.

There was tight security outside the court for yesterday's sitting. Uniformed gardaí were backed up by plain-clothes detectives and members of the Emergency Response Unit.

Mr Ryan was shot in the head by a gunman wearing a balaclava as he sat in a car in Moyross late last Sunday night.

In a separate court case yesterday, a 15-year-old youth also appeared at Limerick District Court charged with a number of shooting incidents in Southill.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with recklessly discharging a firearm on three dates in July, August and September in the Southill area of Limerick.

He was also remanded in custody to appear again before Limerick District Court tomorrow.
