A Co Cork man has been remanded on bail charged in connection with the robbery of over £26 million from the Northern Bank in Belfast.
Timothy John Cunningham (33) of Church View, Farran was arrested this morning in Cork and charged with two offences under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.
At an appearance at Cork District Court, the court heard Mr Cunningham made no reply when charged.
Mr Cunningham was charged with transferring £200,000 to one Dan Joe Guerin on January 21st, 2005, knowing or believing it to be the proceeds of the robbery of cash from the Northern Bank Cash Centre in Donegall Square West, Belfast on December 20th, 2004.
He was also charged with possessing £3,010,380 knowing or believing it to be the proceeds of the robbery.
State Solicitor for Cork City, Barry Galvin said that the charges were significant and were associated with another case before the court but they were different from those in that the charges against Mr Cunningham Jnr were of an aiding and abetting nature.
Mr Galvin said that Mr Cunningham Jnr had been abroad and had returned to Ireland to face the charges and as a result the case had no objection to bail. He asked for a week long adjournment to allow for service of the book of evidence which runs to 1,000 pages.
Mr Cunningham's solicitor, Frank Buttimer noted that there was no objection to bail.
Judge Uinsinn Mac Gruairc remanded Mr Cunningham Jnr on bail on his own bond of €50,000 and an independent surety of €8,000 to be lodged in court to appear again on May 28th.
