An unemployed man was accused today of an arson attack that led to a huge rescue operation from a block of flats in Belfast.

Firefighters helped 14 people evacuate Claremont Court in the south of the city as smoke billowed through the building.

Detectives brought in to investigate later charged Mr David McAuley (37) over the blaze early yesterday. Mr McAuley, of Larne Road in Ballymena, Co Antrim, denies two counts of arson and arson with intent to endanger life.

Even though he replied "not guilty" when the offences were put to him, Constable Amanda Simms told Belfast Magistrates' Court she could connect him with the charges. Claremont Court, in Abercorn Street, is run by a housing association in Belfast.

Up to 20 firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus were forced to go into the building after it went up in flames. One person was treated for smoke inhalation once the fire had been brought under control.

It is believed the blaze was started in a communal hallway on the third floor. Mr McAuley was remanded in custody to appear again on December 29th. His lawyer told the court he would be applying for bail next week.
