A 55-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a 49-year-old mother-of-two in central Dublin on Tuesday night.

Mr John O'Neill appeared before the Bridewell District Court this morning. He presented himself to gardaí yesterday and was held overnight at Harcourt Terrace Garda Station.

The woman found dead in Dublin city centre on Tuesday was last night named as Rosemary Dowling of Home Villas, Donnybrook.

Ms Dowling is understood to have owned a shop in the area near where she was found.

Her naked body was tied in a blanket and dumped on the corner of Mercer Street and Aungier Place at around 4.15am on Tuesday.

Postmortem results indicated that she died of head injuries.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that Ms Dowling was brought to Mercer Street - possibly dumped from a passing vehicle - after the murder took place elsewhere.
