A CO LIMERICK man was charged at the Special Criminal[ Court in Dublin yesterday with having a gun in Adare, Co Limerick, when Det Garda Jerry McCabe was shot dead there on June 7th.

Mr Michael O'Neill (45), of Lisheen Park, Patrickswell, was charged with IRA membership on June 18th and with having a firearm with intent to endanger life at Adare on June 7th.

Det Sgt P.J. Walsh said he arrested Mr O'Neill at Henry Street in Limerick at 7.29 a.m. yesterday on suspicion of being a member of the IRA, cautioned him and O'Neill made no reply.

Det Sgt Walsh said O'Neill's period of detention due to expire at 7.49 a.m. yesterday but Mr O'Neill was released from custody at 7.27 a.m. and arrested shortly afterwards. He was remanded in custody until Tuesday.
