A MAN charged with the murder of a 17-year-old from Somalia in a hostel for asylum seekers in Limerick last weekend will make an application for bail next week.

Farah Redouane (21), of Sarsfield Inn Hostel, Sarsfield Street, Limerick, and originally from Morocco, is charged with the murder of Ali Ibrahim Lal at the hostel on December 27th.

The victim, who had also been living at the hostel, died following a stabbing incident during the afternoon.

Mr Redouane was charged with the murder of the 17-year-old at a special court sitting in Limerick on Sunday night. He was remanded in custody and appeared before Limerick District Court again yesterday morning.

His solicitor, Chris Lynch, said he would be making a bail application on behalf of his client in the High Court in Dublin next Monday. Mr Lynch told the court his client had not received medical attention while in custody, despite a court order requesting it.

Judge Tom O’Donnell said he was “quite surprised” to learn this and reaffirmed the order made by Judge Aeneas McCarthy at the special court sitting last Sunday.

Judge O’Donnell said the issue of bail was a matter for the High Court and remanded Mr Redouane in custody until January 7th next when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court again. The judge ordered that an Arabic interpreter be present in court again on that date.

Meanwhile, gardaí are still awaiting the arrival of Mr Lal’s next of kin from Somalia before his remains will be released for burial. A relative of the 17-year-old who lives in England travelled to Limerick at the weekend to formally identify his body.
