A appeared at a special sitting in Kenmare District Court, Co Kerry, last night, charged with the manslaughter of his sister, whose body was found near Tralee on Wednesday. Mr Robert O'Brien (25), St John's Park, Castleisland, was charged with unlawfully killing Ms Elizabeth McCarthy at the Quay, Blennerville, Co Kerry, last Tuesday.

Det Sgt John Brennan gave evidence of formally arresting Mr O'Brien at Tralee Garda station. Supt Pat Sullivan, for the DPP, said he would be objecting to bail.

Mr Pat Mann, solicitor for Mr O'Brien, said he would be making no application "at this time".

Judge Humphrey Kelleher remanded Mr O'Brien in custody to Cork prison to appear tomorrow at Tralee District Court.

Ms McCarthy's body was discovered on Wednesday in a river by a passer-by walking his dog.

A member of the settled Traveller community living in Tralee, she was a married woman and the mother of three young children

She was originally from Castleisland and she had been reported missing on Tuesday. She had attended a cousin's wedding near Tralee on Monday.

Mr O'Brien was one of two men arrested early yesterday. The second man, in his 30s, was released without charge last night. A file is to be sent to the DPP.
