A MAN was charged with the murder of a six-month-old baby when he appeared at a special sitting of the District Court in Cork yesterday evening.

Mr Fergus Whitty (30), from Mount Vernon Crescent, South Douglas Road, Cork, was arrested yesterday at 7.55 a.m. at his home and taken to Togher Garda station where he was held on suspicion of having murdered Vanessa Kelly at Mount Vernon Crescent between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 6.30a.m. on Sunday last.

Det Sgt Tim O'Sullivan told Uinsin Mac Gruairc that Mr Whitty was released at 5.46 p.m. when he was charged with the murder of the baby. He said the accused man did not reply when asked if he had anything to say.

Mr Whitty was remanded in custody to appear in the District Court at 10.30 a.m. today.
