A British terrorism suspect was charged by police with intending to kidnap and kill a member of the British armed forces, prosecutors said today.
The man was one of nine suspects held by anti-terrorism police in raids across Birmingham last week.
The UK has been on alert since four British Muslims killed 52 people on London's transport system in July 2005 in Western Europe's first Islamist suicide bombings.
Media reports said the suspects' plot was to kidnap and kill a Muslim British soldier and put a video of the killing on the Internet.
A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service said the man faced a charge of "engaging in conduct to give effect to his intention to kidnap and kill a member of the armed forces".
He was also charged with intending to supply equipment to others for use in acts of terrorism. He faces a third charge of entering into a funding arrangement which may be used for terrorism.
Four other men are charged with the two latter offences, with one accused of failing to disclose information that could prevent an act of terrorism.
The men were charged overnight but details of the offences only emerged at a news conference later today.
