A MAN charged with rape and assault causing harm to a woman was refused bail at a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday.
The man, who is 31 and cannot be named, is accused of committing the offences at Castle Street, Limerick city, in the early hours of Saturday.
Det Garda Andrew Lacey of Mayorstone Garda station told the court that when charged with rape the accused replied: “I didn’t do that.”
When charged with assault, the accused replied: “She assaulted me too.”
Gardaí objected to the granting of bail on a number of grounds, including the “seriousness of the charges”.
Garda Lacey, under questioning from solicitor Sarah Ryan, confirmed that the alleged victim had been examined medically.
Garda Lacey said investigating gardaí would be “expeditiously” seeking the resulting medical report.
Insp Paul Reidy described the case as “very serious”.
After hearing Garda Lacey object to bail on several grounds, Judge Aeneas McCarthy refused bail.
The accused was remanded in custody to appear before Limerick District Court on May 8th for DPP directions.
