A MAN appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday in connection with a stabbing incident in Rathmines early on Saturday morning.

Mr Stephen Boyle (28), of Lower Rathmines Road, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Mr Douglas McManus, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, at Lower Rathmines Road at about 4 a.m. on Saturday.

The arresting officer, Det Inspector Tony Brislane, told Judge Murrough Connellan he had cautioned and charged Mr Boyle in Portlaoise Garda station at 12.55 a.m. on Sunday and a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court had remanded Mr Boyle in custody.

Ms Jenny McKeever, who appeared for Mr Boyle, made an application for hail. She asked Det Insp Brislane if he agreed the accused had given himself up voluntarily.

"Ultimately, he walked into Portlaoise Garda station," Det Insp Brislane replied. However, the garda objected to hail. He said there was "the problem of interfering with witnesses where he's staying at the same address".

Ms McKeever said along with the Lower Rathmines Road address, the accused had another address at a halting site in Portlaoise, where his wife, Brigid, lived.

"He will be contesting the matter, and he did hand himself in," she added.

Judge Connellan said he was satisfied with the garda's evidence regarding the possibility of interference with witnesses. In view of the seriousness of the matter, he said, he was not granting hail. He remanded Mr Boyle in custody to appear at District Court No.6 on August 12th at 12.30 p.m.
