A man (27) appeared in court this morning charged with the murder of Swiss school student Manuela Riedo (17) who was killed in Galway city 10 days ago.

Gerard Barry, with an address at 187 Rosán Glas, Rahoon, Galway, was charged with the murder of Ms Riedo (17) at Lough Atalia, Galway, on October 8th.

He was remanded in custody at Galway District Court until next Friday.

A large crowd gathered outside the court, and Mr Barry was jeered as he was escorted into the building.

He was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison, Co Roscommon, and will appear at Harristown District Court in the prison next Friday. He was granted free legal aid by the court.

Two other men and a woman who were arrested in connection with the murder have been released without charge while a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ms Riedo, the only child of Hans and Arlette Riedo, was from Hinterkappeln, a suburb of Bern in Switzerland. A postmortem found she died of strangulation.

Her funeral takes place in her home village near Berne today. She had been in Galway for just three days on a 14-day intensive English language course.

The Irish ambassador to Switzerland, James Sharkey, will represent the Government at the funeral. The mayor of Galway, the city manager, and representatives of three of the city's language schools will also attend.

Beverly Bazler, director of the Galway Language Centre where Ms Riedo was enrolled, is bringing books of condolence.
