A MAN appeared at Tullamore District Court last night charged with the murder of a middle aged woman whose body was found in the boot of a car in the town.

Mr Sean Brennan (48) with an address at Church Street, Tullamore, but originally from Tyrells pass, Co Westmeath, was arrested by gardai yesterday.

He was charged with the murder of Mrs Bernie Sherry (44) at Shanderry, Portarlington, Co Laois, between 6 p.m. on Saturday April 5th and 11.15 a.m. yesterday, contrary to common law.

Dressed in a blue suit, Mr Brennan showed no emotion in the courtroom.

Det Sgt Mick Dalton, of Tullamore Garda station, told the court that the defendant was charged at 7.15 p.m. He said that after cautioning him that anything he said would be taken down and used in court, Mr Brennan replied: "I have already told you all that happened."

Mr Donal Farrelly, for Mr Brennan, said that no application was being made for bail.

Judge Aidan O'Donnell remanded Mr Brennan in custody to Killucan District Court on Thursday.

At Mr Farrelly's request, he also ordered that a psychiatric assessment be prepared.

Mrs Sherry's body - with a gunshot wound - was found in the boot of a car in a car park behind the library hall apartment complex on Church Street at 11 a.m. yesterday.

Mrs Sherry, who was separated from her husband, and had two daughters and a son, had been living about half a mile outside the town.

Originally from Dangan, Co Offaly, she had been living until recently in Tyrells pass.
