A man appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court last night charged with the theft of £300,000 worth of jewellery.

Mr James Cahill (24), an unemployed single man with addresses at Sycamore Drive, Kilrush, Co Clare and Birmingham, England was charged with stealing the jewellery from Hartmann & Son Jewellers on William Street, Galway, on January 19th.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Mr Cahill in custody to a sitting of Galway District Court on February 1st.
