Man critical after Limerick shooting

A man was fighting for his life today after accidentally shooting himself.

A man was fighting for his life today after accidentally shooting himself.

It is understood the 29-year-old man shot himself in the head at a house in St Mary’s Park, the Island, Limerick City at around 2am.

Gardai said the armed Regional Support Unit, which was set up last year to tackle Limerick’s gangland violence, was on patrol in the area when a man ran out of the house and raised the alarm.

An ambulance was called and the injured man was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital, where gardai said he was in a critical condition.

A gun was recovered at the scene and no arrests were made. Gardai sealed off the area and a technical examination was taking place today.
