A 22-year-old south Dublin man was critically ill in hospital last night after being shot in the bedroom of his house in the Drimnagh area at 4 a.m. yesterday.

Garda∅ suspect the attack on the man is connected with another shooting three hours earlier outside a public house in Benburb Street on the north side. Two men were injured when shots were fired from a shotgun at a group outside the pub at around 1 a.m. It is believed the shootings arose from a feud between two groups based in the south inner city.

Garda∅ said that at around 4.00 a.m. a car carrying a number of men armed with at least one shotgun and a number of handguns pulled up outside a house in Cooley Road, Drimnagh. A man with a shotgun blasted the handle off the front door.

Two men then went upstairs where they opened fire on a man who was asleep in his bed. They shot him a number of times and it is believed he suffered severe injuries to his spleen and kidneys. The victim has been known to garda∅ for some time.

One young man, the brother of the man who was shot, escaped from the house without injury.

Garda∅ are concerned that there might be further acts of violence arising from the two shootings.

Meanwhile, garda∅ from Sundrive Road station in Crumlin recovered 1 kg of heroin from the home of a man in his late 60s living in a sheltered home in Artane, north Dublin, at the weekend.

The seizure is one of the largest finds of heroin in the city in the past year.
