A man accused of murder allegedly told gardai he had intended to kill his neighbour when he hit him over the head with an axe, a jury in the Central Criminal Court heard yesterday.

Mr Cormac Guinan (57), of Ard Aoibhinn sheltered dwellings, Mountbolas, Tullamore, Co Offaly, pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Patrick Lee (74), of the same address on the April 29th, 1997.

Mr Michael Durack SC, prosecuting, told the jury the defence accepted the accused had cut Mr Lee in the neck with a penknife and he had died from blows to the head inflicted on him by the accused. Mr Durack said the issue before the court was whether the accused was "sane or insane" at the time of these incidents.

The trial continues today.
