A young man with severe psychological problems caused by drink and drugs died after swallowing a substance commonly used during sex, a Belfast inquest heard today.

Gary Kieran (25) from Cameron Street in Belfast had been drinking Isobutyl Nitrite, known as "poppers", when he collapsed and died on the landing of his flat.

He was found by his flatmate Mr Martin McBride who was not present at the inquest.  In a statement, Mr McBride said that when he arrived home on March 7th, 2003, Mr Kieran told him he was "buzzed".

He said his friend was an ashen grey colour and kept sniffing from the bottle of poppers while watching television.  "He put the bottle of drugs to his mouth and begin drinking from the bottle," the statement added.
