One man died and another was injured last night when police opened fire on a car which struck police officers after failing to stop in Co Antrim.

The shooting happened at Crumlin Road, Ballinderry Upper, near Lisburn, just after 7 p.m. when officers tried to stop a vehicle which had been seen driving suspiciously.

The car failed to stop, striking at least two police officers.

A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said shots were then discharged by police and two men were injured, one of them critically.

One man, believed to be in his 20s, died in Lagan Valley Hospital, Lisburn.

The other was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital some 20 miles away. His condition was not immediately known.

The Office of the Ombudsman Ms Nuala O'Loan, is to carry out an inquiry. It is the first shooting involving the PSNI for some time. Officers shot and injured one man during a security operation in Belfast last November when they discovered a device which was made up of two gas cylinders and two pipe bombs, linked to a number of containers containing flammable liquid. The incident was linked to dissident republicans. Detectives working with Mrs Nuala O'Loan's Police Ombudsman's office were last night at the scene and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Mrs O'Loan's office is automatically summoned to carry out investigations when police officers shoot citizens.

She will prepare a report on the incident which will be forwarded to the Chief Constable of the PSNI, Mr Hugh Orde, and to the Northern Secretary, Mr Paul Murphy.
