Man dies after stabbing at New Year's Eve party

A 23-year-old man died after receiving a stab wound at a New Year's Eve party in Dublin early yesterday.

A 23-year-old man died after receiving a stab wound at a New Year's Eve party in Dublin early yesterday.

The incident was believed to have happened in the front garden of a house at Cloonmore Park, Tallaght, around 3.30 a.m. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital but was dead on arrival. He was from Cloonmore Park and has been named as Mr Christopher Farrell.

The scene at Cloonmore Park was preserved for technical examination by garda∅ and a post-mortem was carried out by the assistant State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.

Last night a man was charged with affray and a breach of the Offensive Weapons Act. He will appear in Tallaght District Court this morning.

The Tallaght incident was the second stabbing of the New Year reported to the Garda.

Earlier, at 2.34 a.m., a 27-year-old man was rushed to Cork University Hospital after he was stabbed in the upper body in what garda∅ described as a domestic incident.

It happened at Greenmount Buildings, Greenmount, Cork, and the injured man had to undergo surgery. His condition was described by the hospital last evening as comfortable.

Meanwhile, at 6.05 a.m. yesterday a young man was shot at least twice as he walked home through the Moyross housing estate in Limerick. The 22-year-old was walking between Craeval Park and College Avenue when the shooting occurred. He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital, where his condition has been described as stable.

Also yesterday, a number of youths celebrating the new year were arrested for public order offences after garda∅ were called to deal with disturbances in the Clondalkin area of Dublin. When garda∅ arrived at Rowlagh Park at 12.30 a.m. between 60 and 80 youths attacked their patrol cars with bricks, bottles and iron bars. Windows in two patrol cars were smashed and number of garda∅ were kicked and punched.

Five youths were arrested and taken to Ronanstown Garda station. A Garda spokeswoman said some of them will be dealt with under the juvenile liaison scheme and others are due before Kilmainham District Court on January 28th when they will face charges in connection with the incidents.
