A man has died while working overnight at the ESB Lough Ree power station in Lanesborough, Co Longford.

A man has died while working overnight at the ESB Lough Ree power station in Lanesborough, Co Longford.

Bord na Móna has contacted the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and launched its own inquiry following the workplace death.

The incident took place at about 12.50am at the peat burning station. The man in his 50s was taken to Mullingar General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a statement this morning, Bord na Móna extended its sympathies to the employee's family.

"The company have been working with the emergency services through the night and have already informed the HSA," it said.

"The company have also begun an internal inquiry into the circumstances of the man's death. Our deepest sympathies go to his family at this difficult time."

Gardaí are also investigating the circumstances. 

The power station, on the banks of the river Shannon, burns milled peat supplied by Bord Na Móna.
